Cleaning is a great way to rid your floors of both debris and germs through sweeping or vacuuming and mopping. However, even though germs are removed, and the risk of infection-spreading is lowered, this process does not kill all germs.

Floor disinfecting is the process of killing germs on contact, usually through the use of some chemical compounds. The best practice is to clean first and then disinfect, to eliminate the possibility of viral spread.

For hard surface flooring, a microfiber type mop is perfect for cleaning, as is a vacuum. After cleaning, you can disinfect with a variety of bacteria and viruses killing cleaners. Just be sure to check your manufacturer's guidelines for the cleaners that are safe to use on your flooring.

For carpets and rugs, you should already be vacuuming daily. Use slow, sweeping passes so the beaters thoroughly stir up what might be ground deep into the fibers. The best way to disinfect these materials is with a manufacturer-approved soap and water combination or cleaners that won’t damage the flooring.
